Colour therapy is to give the ailing body an extra dose of any colour that is lacking.

In the Pink… Feeling Blue… Green with envy… Red with anger… The list goes on, showing that colours are a very important part of our lives and a closer view shows an important part of our health too. “Since the beginning colours have been blessed with Magical and Therapeutical qualities. The ancient Egyptians used Colour in healing their temples, Chinese and Mystics of India associated colours with the chakras. We do not realize but we need colour around us all the time, it’s our ‘Omnipresent Companion’ throughout our life”, says Amisha Mehta. For Amisha Mehta who practices Colour Therapy, her art, whether painting, poetry or music, has been a journey from an inner urge to create and explore the empty terrain within.

When did you start practicing Colour Therapy?

I started practicing Colour Therapy five years back. I am trained in Applied Art and pursued my career as a visualizer in art agencies till I felt the urge to shift into fine arts and since then there has been no looking back. Shifting from realistic to landscape to the elements of life, I now concentrate on extensions of the five elements i.e. Fire, Water, Air, Earth, Space and Life Energies, Cosmic Forces, etc.

What is Colour Therapy?

Colour Therapy is a holistic form of healing wherein traditionally the seven colours of the spectrum are worked with. All the colours from a psychological stand point have positive and negative attributes to it. The Colour spectrum is composed of different frequencies and wavelengths of light energies. Colour therapy relates to specific areas of the body known as energy centre or chakras. Each centre has its significant clout so colours are accordingly used.

How does it Work? What is the process?

There are many techniques used in Colour Therapy such as colour breathing, colour absorption, colour visualization, etc. but what is best for the patient, is the therapist’s decision. The therapy works at a very deep level i.e. Mind-Body-Spirit and is absorbed by the body through the extra-sensory organs like eyes, ears, skin, tongue. Through the eyes, colour enters the body and stimulates the pituitary gland, causing it to secrete certain hormones. It is a proven fact that there is a reaction from the body to light even without vision. It is possible that skin senses radiation through certain cells.

How do you give the detailed look to your paintings?

I have been a painter first for the last 25 years and then a therapist for the last five years, thus the detailed look is not a problem for me. I am deeply connected to my canvas and the colours, so whatever I feel and experience as a person is what I portray through my inner colours on the canvas.

What problems can be healed through this therapy?

All problems can be treated through Colour and Music Therapy like psychological, emotional, stress-related and medical, etc. The principle of healing with Colour therapy is to give the ailing body an extra dose of any colour that is lacking.

For e.g.: Red stimulates, Orange used for creative growth, Yellow colour of the sun used for strengthening the personality, Green colour of nature and grow this healer, Blue calms, Violet and Indigo higher colours used as sedatives and meditation.

What inspired you to enter this profession?

It was an internal inspiration towards the five elements Fire, Water, Air, Earth, Space and kept my first exhibition on this theme. It was highly appreciated by many and this encouraged me to move ahead in this field. People would come and sit for hours together in the exhibition and feel rejuvenated with calm, fresh, peaceful mind. And this is what keeps me going.

Future plans?

My future plans are to take Colour and Music Therapy to a level such that everyone can benefit through them. Colours and Music are free flowing from nature, but we have moved away from them, so let’s connect back to nature, our very source of Energy-Giving.
