DR.SUDHA KAUL – As the Founder, Trustee, and Vice Chairperson of the Indian Institute of Cerebral Palsy (IICP) in Kolkata, she has been a trailblazer in the field of special needs education. In 1974, when there were no schools for children with cerebral palsy in Eastern India, she spearheaded the establishment of the first school alongside a group of young pioneers who believed in their children’s learning abilities.
Under her leadership, the IICP has evolved from a small school to a prominent training institute in India, serving as a catalyst for cerebral palsy services in twenty major cities across the country and in every district of West Bengal. The organization’s dedication and impact were recognized with the National Award for the Best Disability NGO by the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, Government of India, in 2004. Today, the institute is affiliated with Jadavpur University in Kolkata.
In addition to her role at the IICP, she holds the position of Vice-Chair and Executive Director. Her influence extends beyond India, as she has been appointed President of the International Society for Augmentative and Alternative Communication (ISAAC), an esteemed international agency with UN Consultative status. Her dedication and commitment to empowering individuals with cerebral palsy have made her an inspiration in the field of special education and advocacy.
