SHAKUNTALA DEVI – Known as the “human computer,” she is an Indian writer and mental calculator who rose to fame as a child prodigy. Her remarkable talent earned her a coveted spot in the 1982 edition of The Guinness Book of World Records.
Demonstrating astounding mental calculation skills, she could calculate the cube root of 61,629,875 and the seventh root of 170,859,375 in seconds, and multiply two 13-digit numbers in just 28 seconds. Her most famous feat was at the University of Dallas, where she found the 23rd root of a 201-digit number in just 50 seconds, outpacing a computer’s one-minute calculation.
In addition to her mathematical prowess, Shakuntala Devi authored several books on mathematics, puzzles, and astrology. She was a strong advocate for mathematics education and mental calculation skills.
